The Basement Laundry Room
Often the beautiful laundry rooms in the magazines are on the main level, with lots of natural light and access to an outdoor clothesline. Even though your basement laundry may not have one of those quaint Dutch half-doors, a basement laundry can afford many of the same great features. And there are even a couple of advantages to a basement laundry.
Done well, a renovated basement laundry room won’t give clothes the ‘basement smell’, will contain the disorganization of sorted piles of clothes and towels, provide dedicated space for hang-to-dry delicates, and a system for soaking stained clothes, ironing and folding clothes. Add in cabinets, counter space, a deep sink, and a faucet with a detachable, hand-held sprayer and you’ve got a launderer’s dream.
Advantages of a basement laundry room.
• Setting and leveling your washer and dryer on the basement concrete floor can increase the longevity of your appliances by reducing the wear-and-tear on the balancing mechanisms for the washing and drying drums within the machines.
• Contain the disorganization of the process of laundry away from the day-to-day living spaces and entrances/exits of your home provides flexibility in completing the task, reduces stress, and maintains the tidiness of other rooms, like kids’ bedrooms.
• Dedicated space to deal with the laundering of smelly hockey or football equipment, work clothes and hanging delicate clothes that need to be air dried or space and time to block and dry fine wool sweaters.
• Plumbing is available if a basement half bathroom is something needed for your growing family, or so your house guests can have their own bathroom when visiting.
• A window with egress can be installed to provide additional natural light to the basement and may be opened to provide a light breeze.
• The potential for water damage is very low risk with the addition of a floor drain in comparison to a main floor laundry or laundry on a second floor.
• Noise from the washing and drying machines is much reduced with a basement laundry; technology in laundry machines isn’t like the ‘silent’ dishwashers.
